The two policemen were injured in the firing and they were admitted to a hospital, where they died, the officials said.

A police spokesman confirming the deaths, identified the slain cops as SgCT Mohammad Sultan and Ct Fayaz Ahmad.

“Terrorists fired upon a police party at Gulshan Chowk area of #Bandipora. In this #terror incident, 02 police personnel namely SgCT Mohd Sultan & Ct Fayaz Ahmad got injured & attained #martyrdom. Area cordoned off. Further details shall follow,” police said on Twitter.

Soon after the attack, the security forces cordoned off the area and launched a search operation to nab the attackers, said the spokesman.

Police have registered a case and an investigation is in progress, he said.

Meanwhile, Lt Governor, Manoj Sinha condemned the attack saying, the barbaric action would be avenged.

“No words are strong enough to condemn the heinous terrorist attack on our brave JK Police jawans SgCT Mohd Sultan & Ct Fayaz Ahmad at Bandipora. I convey my heartfelt condolences to the families of the martyrs.

“We are firmly resolved to avenge this barbaric action by the enemies of peace & determined to completely dismantle the terror ecosystem. J&K administration will extend all possible support to martyrs (sic) families,” Office of LG J&K tweeted.

The killings have also been strongly condemned by political parties.

“I condemn the militant attack on the police in Bandipore area of North Kashmir earlier today that resulted in the death in the line of duty of J&K police personnel Muhammad Sultan and Fayaz Ahmad. May Allah grant them Jannat & may their families find strength at this time,” National Conference vice-president Omar Abdullah wrote on Twitter.

The Peoples Conference wrote: “We strongly condemn the militant attack in Gulshan Chowk, Bandipora today in which two policemen lost their lives. Heartfelt condolences & sympathies with their families.”

CPI(M) leader M Y Tarigami also condemned the killing and demanded stern action against those responsible for the attack.

Apni Party President Syed Mohammad Altaf Bukhari also condemned the militant attack on a policy party that led to the killing of two policemen in Bandipora district today afternoon.

In a statement issued here, Bukhari termed the attack as heart wrenching and barbaric. He said: “The senseless bloodshed has only destroyed the life of people in Kashmir. Forces inimical to peace will yield nothing through violence except for adding to the miseries of people.”

Bukhari extended his profound condolences to the bereaved families to bear this irretrievable loss and prayed for eternal peace to the departed souls.
