Srinagar: Two militants were arrested in Shopian district of south Kashmir, and arms & ammunition from their possession, police said Sunday.

In a statement, police spokesperson said that acting on specific input regarding presence of an “active terrorist Shahid Ahmad Gaine, son of Gulzar Ahmad Ganie, resident of Doomwani Keegam, of proscribed terror outfit LeT and his close associate at village Doomwani near Rambi Ara, police alongwith troops of 44RR and 14Bn CRPF launched a joint cordon and search operation in the area.”

When the search party approached to the suspected spot, the two suspects tried to flee from the spot, but were arrested tactfully, police spokesman said.

He identified the second arrested as Kifayat Ayoub Alie, son of Mohammad Ayoub Alie, resident of Pinjoora Shopian.

“Incriminating materials, arms and ammunition including one Chinese pistol, one pistol magazine, two Chinese hand-grenades, eight pistol rounds, besides cash of ₹2.9 lakh were recovered from their possession,” spokesman said.

He said a case (FIR No.294/2021) under relevant sections of law has been registered and further investigation has been taken up.
