Dir H&H inaugurates workshop on packaging of handicrafts, handloom products

Srinagar: The two-day workshop on the packaging of handicrafts and handloom products organised by the Directorate of Handicrafts and Handloom Kashmir in collaboration with Indian Institute of Packaging (IIP) Mumbai commenced today at Kashmir Haat Srinagar.

The workshop was inaugurated by Director Handicrafts and Handloom Kashmir, Mahmood Ahmad Shah.

Speaking on the occasion, the Director said that packaging of the products have evolved as a successful market tool to increase the sales of products and the same becomes more important in the present era of online business strategies.

Besides training and demonstration on packaging designs, the issues-based discussions, importance of packaging design and improvement of current packaging practices will be shared in the Handcrafts/Handloom Sector of J&K, Director H&H said.

A team headed by Director IIP Mumbai, Tanveer Alam, provided insights on the packaging issues to the participants.

On the occasion, Joint Director and Regional Head IIP, Dr Gaurav Madhu and Deputy Director IIP, Rahul B Tirpude gave PowerPoint presentations on different aspects of packaging.

The participants who attended the workshop included the Cardboard Unit Holders, Artisans, Cooperative Societies, producer companies besides the representatives, officials of Handicrafts & Handloom Development Corporation, National Institute of Fashion Technology, Indian Institute of Carpet Technology, Craft Development Institute and official of the Handicrafts & Handloom Department from all districts.

The participants attended the workshop so that the exposure in relation to the dissemination of information of packaging will reach to every nook and corner of Kashmir.

The H&H department aims to implement a training module run by it through training programmes at various centres.

On the first day of the workshop, various prototypes for Paper Machie, carpet, pashmina silk and walnut were unveiled.

Apart from attractive designing of packaging materials information related to craft and artisan is also displayed on these prototypes. In addition, the packaging material is also QR coded helping the marking of genuine products and dissemination of information pertaining to artisans and crafts.
