Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir National Conference on Wednesday decried slashing of Public Safety Act (PSC) on YNC Jammu functionary, Tariq Ahmed Dar.

Taking exception to the harsh measure, Party Spokesperson Imran Nabi Dar stated that the party’s youth leader has been at the forefront of a peaceful agitation demanding due compensation to families, whose lands were procured by the government for the purpose of four-laning of  Jammu –Srinagar National Highway at Banihal.

“It is very unfortunate to see the administration nose dive to such a new low. Tariq was only giving voice to the voiceless and helping the locals to get their voices heard in the power corridors. He was only voicing for isolated, marginalized and powerless. The crackdown is an overboard attempt to choke a critical voice. He is only being punished for his outspokenness,” he said.

“The move is baseless and points towards the emergency-like situation in Jammu and Kashmir.  Sadly the law is being used to get mainstream political activists out of circulation.  I on behalf of my party condemn the measure and demand revocation of PSA and release of our colleague, whose devotion to public service and values of democracy are recognized by one and all,” he said.

Among others, district President Ramban Sajjad Ahmed Shaheen has also expressed anguish over the measure and demanded immediate release of the youth leader.
