Srinagar: Police on Monday registered a case against the persons involved in spreading fake news on social media.

“Cognizance with regard to fake news was taken, which claimed that a firing incident had taken place in Khayam area. The fake news created panic in the area and Police immediately reacted to the news and found it baseless after verification,” police said in a statement issued here today.

A police spokesman said that taking legal action against persons who have spread the fake news about a firing incident in Khayam area on 18-10-20, Police Station Khanyar registered a formal case against persons who have spread this fake news on social media and misled the public.

“In this regard, a case under FIR number 77/20 of police station Khanyar has been registered under relevant sections of law & investigation set in motion,” police said.

Meanwhile, police urged people not to publish or forward any rumour or unauthentic information into the public domain by any means of communication or through social media.
