Soldier killed, 2 injured in cross-LoC firing in Kupwara

Srinagar/Jammu: : An army soldier was killed and two others injured as the armies of India and Pakistan traded fire along the Line of Control in Nowgam sector of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district on Saturday.

Quoting official sources, news agency GNS reported that the Pakistani army targeted army posts in Nowgam sector in which one soldier identified as Bupinder Singh was killed while Lance Naik Venkatesh and Sepoy Shajal were injured who were later shifted to Army’s 92 Base hospital in Srinagar.

When contacted, a defence ministry spokesman Col Rajesh Kalia said that they were collecting the details.

However, SP Handwara confirmed that a soldier died and two other suffered injuries. He said the injured were in a stable condition.

Meanwhile, Pakistani troops engaged in firing and intense mortar shelling in three sectors along the Line of Control (LoC) in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday, a defence spokesman said.

The firing and shelling from across the border in Shahpur, Kirni and Degwar sectors started around 9.15 am.

Indian Army personnel guarding the LoC gave a strong and befitting response to the cross-border fire, the spokesman said.

He said the exchange of fire was going on when last reports were received.

There was no report of any casualty on the Indian side, the spokesman said.
