Covid-19: J&K records 17339 positive cases; 326 deaths in August

Srinagar: The month of August proved to be the deadliest month on the Covid-19 front so far as 17339 COVID positive cases and 326 deaths were recorded in the Union Territory of J&K during past 31 days.

As per the official data, in the first 115 days (from March 08-June 30) 101 Covid-19 related deaths were witnessed in Jammu and Kashmir including 89 from Kashmir division and 12 from Jammu division, news agency KNO reported.

From July 01 to 31st of July, J&K recorded 276 Covid-19 deaths. As per the official data, in the month of August, 326 deaths including 286 from Kashmir division and 40 from Jammu division were reported.

The data, as per KNO reveals that 17,339 new positive cases were reported from J&K in month of August including 13,002 from Kashmir division and 4,337 from Jammu division, so the share of positive cases in Kashmir division is 74.98 percent while that of Jammu is 25.02 percent.

The first case of the COVID-19 pandemic in India was reported on 30 January 2020.  Slowly, the pandemic spread to various states and union territories including Jammu & Kashmir.

Two suspected cases with high virus load were detected and isolated on 4 March in Government Medical College, Jammu. One of them became the first confirmed positive case on 09 March, 2020. Both individuals had a travel history to Iran.

Meanwhile, Jammu and Kashmir on Monday recorded 535 new cases of coronavirus, taking the total number of infected persons to 37,698, officials said.

They said among the new cases, 245 were from the Jammu region while 290 were from the Kashmir valley.

Jammu district reported the highest number of 139 new cases, followed by 90 in Srinagar district, the officials said.

There are 7,980 active cases of the coronavirus disease in the UT at present while 29,015 patients have recovered so far, they said.

In the meantime, a 25-year-old youth was among eight more persons who died due to covid-19 in Jammu and Kashmir since overnight, taking the fatality count to 705, officials said on Monday.

Among the victims, official sources told GNS, four were from Jammu division and as many from Kashmir Valley.

A 46-year-old woman from Bakshi Nagar Jammu, at present Raj Pura Magotrian, died a day after she was admitted to the Government Medical College hospital Jammu.

The doctors said a 65-year-old woman from Gangyal Jammu who was admitted on August 28 died at GMC hospital Jammu.

A 45-year-old woman from sector no. 7 Upper Ploura Janipur Jammu who was suffering from “hypertension, type 2 diabetes mellitus with bilateral infilterates” died at 8.10 a.m. today at the hospital, the doctors said.

A 38-year-old man from Mir Pur Khour Jammu died 13 days after he was admitted to the hospital with “Type 2 diabetes mellitus, acute on CKD, pleural effusion pyrexia.with covid positive.

Official sources told GNS that a 25-year-old porter from Macchil Kupwara died at army hospital where he had a surgery some days back. He had tested positive subsequently, they said.

Late last night, they said, an elderly person from Kralgund area of the district died at SMHS hospital here where he was admitted.

A 65-year-old from Baghi Sundar Bala Chattabal died four days after being admitted to SMHS hospital with “HTN and COPD,” they added.

With these deaths, officials said, 705 people have succumbed to the virus in Jammu and Kashmir so far. Among them, they said, 638 are from the Valley while 67 others are from Jammu division.
