Three militants killed in two encounters in north & south Kashmir

Srinagar : A militant was killed in an encounter with security forces in Shopian district of south Kashmir on Wednesday, while as two militants were killed in an encounter in Handwara of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district, sources said.

Based on specific inputs about the presence of militants in Chitragam village of south Kashmir district, security forces launched a cordon and search operation there, a police official said.

He said the search operation turned into an encounter after the militants fired on a search party of the forces, who retaliated.

In the ensuing exchange of fire, one militant was killed, the official said.

The militant’s identity and group affiliation is yet to be ascertained, he said, adding that the operation is underway.

Meanwhile, an encounter broke out between militants and security forces at Ganipora Kralgund area of Handwara in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district.

Some official sources said that two militant have been killed in the initial exchange of firing. However, the identity of the killed militants is yet to be ascertained.

Sources said that the gunfight erupted in an orchard and the combing operation continued when this report was being filed.

Sources said that a joint team Police, Army’s 32 RR and CRPF launched a joint cordon-and-search operation in the area.

The hiding militants opened fire, sources said, resulting into an encounter.

In the initial firing, two militants have reportedly been killed. However, further details are still awaited.
