The academician who loved flowers.

Srinagar: Renowned academician and an educationist par excellence, Agha Ashraf Ali passed away at his home late last night.

Family sources said that Agha Ashraf breathed his last at 11:45 pm on Friday at his Rajbagh residence. He was 97.

They said that though he was weak due to old age but was healthy and left this world peacefully minutes after going to bed.

He was laid to rest at his family graveyard Gulistan Baba Mazaar, at Alamgari Bazar area of Old city.

A statement issued by the family said that there will be no congregational ‘Fatiha’ gatherings due to prevailing circumstances in the Valley. People have been requested to offer ‘Fatiha’ individually and offer condolences to the family members through social media.

Agha Ashraf Ali is survived by a son Agha Iqbal Ali and daughters Hena Ahmed and Sameetah Agha.

Meanwhile, the death of the legendary academician has been mourned by people from all sections of the society. JKNC, JKPDP, JKPC, CPI(M) and several other political parties besides literary, social and religious organizations paid glorious tributes to Aga Ashraf.

Social media was flooded with condolence messages from Kashmir and elsewhere mourning the sad demise.

It is pertinent to mention here that Aga Ashraf’s son, Aga Shahid, a great English poet, died in 2001.
