Two militants, ‘active associate’ killed in Shopian encounter

Anantnag: Two militants were killed in an encounter with security forces in Bijbehara of Anantnag district of south Kashmir on Tuesday, police said.

Security forces launched a cordon and search operation at Waghama in Anantnag district in south Kashmir this morning after receiving specific information about the presence of militants in the area, a police official said.

He said the search operation turned into an encounter after militants fired upon a search party of the forces, who retaliated.

Two militants have been killed in the encounter so far, the official said, adding the identity and group affiliation of the slain militants was being ascertained.

This is second encounter in Anantnag district in as many days.  Three militants were killed in the gun battle with security forces at Khulchohar area of the district on Monday.

Meanwhile, a local news agency, KNO, reported that the two militants affiliated with the Islamic State of J&K were killed in an encounter that broke out today in Waghama area of Bijbehara in South Kashmir’s Anantnag district Tuesday morning.

Quoting police, KNO reported that the slain militants had accompanied Zahid, of ISJK, who was involved in the recent firing incident at Bijbehara, Anantnag in which a CRPF man and a five-year-old boy were killed.

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kashmir Kashmir range, Vijay Kumar told the news agency that that two slain militants along with Zahid were involved in the recent attack in Bijbehara, where a CRPF man and a minor boy were killed.

With the killing of these two militants, the total number of militants killed this year in Kashmir has reached 128. Police said that 48 militants were killed during this month (June).
