Two militants, ‘active associate’ killed in Shopian encounter

Srinagar: Two militants were killed in a gunfight with the security forces in Nipora area of south Kashmir on Saturday, police said.

Giving details a police spokesman in a statement issued here today said that on a specific input regarding presence of militants in village Nipora Zadoora Kulgam, a joint cordon and search operation was launched by Police, 19 RR and 18 Bn CRPF.

“During the search operation, the terrorists were given opportunity to surrender, however instead they fired and lobbed grenades upon the joint search party, which was retaliated leading to an encounter,” the spokesman said.

In the ensuing encounter, two militants were killed, he said, adding, bodies of both the militants were retrieved from the site of encounter.

The identification and affiliation of the killed militants is being ascertained, he said, adding the operation was conducted professionally and no collateral damage occurred.

Incriminating material including arms and ammunition were recovered from the site of encounter.

Meanwhile, PTI quoted defence spokesman as saying that the slain militants belonged to Hizb ul Mujahideen outfit. He said two pistols and three grenades were recovered from the slain militants.
