Srinagar: A prominent advocate was on Tuesday appointed a judge of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court.
According to a Law Ministry notification, Javed Iqbal Wani has been appointed a judge of the common High Court of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir and Union Territory of Ladakh.
He is the son-in-law of Mian Abdul Qayoom, the president of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court Bar Association, who remains detained under the Public Safety Act (PSA).
It may be mentioned here that the HC has rejected Qayoom’s plea to revoke his PSA saying he advocates secessionist ideology.
His recommendation, made by the Supreme Court Collegium, was pending with the central government for the past few months.
The recommendation was finally processed last week and the notification issued on Tuesday.
An order issued by the Union Ministry of Justice read: “In exercise of the power conferred by clause (1) of Article 217 of the constitution of India, the president is pleased to appoint Shri Javed Iqbal Wani to be a judge of common high court for the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir and union territory of Ladakh with effect from the date he assumes charge of the office.”
Wani has represented the Union government in several cases in the Jammu and Kashmir High Court.
