Srinagar:  A policeman abducted by militants was rescued while as two militants were killed and a policeman was injured in a brief shootout at Arwani area of Bijbehera in South Kashmir’s Anantnag district, police said.

Earlier, unidentified militants abducted a police man, Sartaj Ahmad (GRP) from Shirpora in Kulgam district.

Security forces had launched a massive hunt to rescue the abducted cop and in a brief encounter near Arwani killed the two militants and rescued the abducted cop.

Sources said that the militants along with the abducted cop were intercepted at a naka point laid by police and army at Kharpora, Arwani in Bijbehera area of South Kashmir’s Anantnag district.

However, some sources said that the encounter took place at Frisal near the place of abduction.

Sources said that the militants opened fire, that was retaliated, and in a brief encounter both the militants got killed while as the abducted cop was rescued.

In the exchange of firing, however, the abducted cop and another police man also sustained injuries and were taken to nearby medical facility for treatment.

Earlier, militants set free a policeman abducted by them from his home in Shopian district of Jammu and Kashmir, officials said here on Friday.

Constable Javaid Jabbar was set free by the militants, hours after his abduction late Thursday night, the officials said.

The militants had abducted Jabbar from his home at Wayil in Shopian around 9:40 pm, the officials said.

Jabbar is posted in the escort unit of a police officer in Hazratbal area of the city and had gone to visit his family on leave, they said.
