Srinagar: The Supreme Court of India on Thursday issued a notice to the Jammu and Kashmir government on a plea seeking restoration of high-speed Internet in view of lockdown imposed in the state to prevent the spread of novel Coronavirus disease.

According to Live Law, the notice – returnable within a week –  was issued to J&K government’s standing counsel through an email by a bench of Justice N V Ramana, Justice R Subhash Reddy and B R Gavai.

Advocates Shadan Farasat and Huzefa Ahmadi apprised the court through video- conferencing, said the report.

In view of the lockdown, Ahmadi submitted that it was extremely necessary to enhance technology and connectivity in Jammu and Kashmir. “The virtual classes of the students can only be done through the enhancement of technology,” Ahmadi said, in his submission.

The PIL filed by Shadaan Farasat on behalf of Media Professionals has challenged the government order restricting Internet access to 2G speeds only.

High-speed Internet remains suspended in Jammu and Kashmir since August 5 last year when the Centre revoked Article Article and bifurcated the state into two union territories.
