Srinagar: The National Conference on Wednesday welcomed the demand made by opposition parties to the Centre for the release of political leaders in Jammu and Kashmir, including its party president Farooq Abdullah and vice-president Omar Abdullah, who are both in detention under the Public Safety Act.

“We welcome the move. It is good to hear saner voices come forward and seek the resumption of political activities and release of all incarcerated leaders and activists,” the party said in a statement here.

Concurring with the opposition parties’ demand, the party said it does not serve any purpose to have political leaders like Abdullah and other former chief ministers kept away from access to people, it stated.

The NC said that keeping political leaders in detention will only fester alienation and decrease the faith of people in democracy.

“We hope the incumbent dispensation will heed the demand of the opposition and release all the detainees’ forthwith to end a nightmarish phase which the democracy in J&K is going through at present,” the party said.
