Samoon reviews functioning of AH, Sheep Husbandry and Fisheries Deptts

JAMMU, JULY 27: Principal Secretary, Animal Husbandry, Sheep Husbandry, Fisheries and Transport, Dr Asgar Hassan Samoon today reviewed the working of the these departments and status of various projects being implemented under different state and central sponsored schemes, here at a meeting of concerned officers.

The meeting was attended by Director Animal Husbandry, Dr. Tahir Hussain Beg, Director Sheep Husbandry, Sanjeev Kumar, Director Fisheries, R N Pandita, senior officers and officials of Animal, Sheep Husbandry, Fisheries, Finance, Planning and other concerned departments.

Dr Samoon asked the officials to carry out their professional duties with dedication and make every scheme of the department a great success. He stressed on seeking timely release of funds to avoid disruption of departmental works and schemes meant for the welfare of the farmers.

The Principal Secretary said that the livestock sector is emerging as an important growth leverage to economy of the state and its share to Gross State Domestic Product is also increasing. “Livestock sector besides extending food security to the people of the state in terms of livestock products also carries a huge potential to contribute towards employment generation in the state” he said adding that Animal/Sheep Husbandry & Fisheries sector is contributing around 5% to the state GDP and 33% to agricultural GDP.

It was informed in the meeting that new posts of Veterinary Doctors and 400 posts of para vets have been created for the first time in last 30 years to revive the functioning of the twin departments .

Dr. Samoon inormed that the process of establishing 3 Mega liquid nitrogen plants at Jammu, Srinagar and Kargil has been started for ensuring sustainable availability liquid nitrogen at AI centres and semen station for cryopreservation of frozen semen straws.

He said that the Veterinary polyclinics in district and block levels are in the pipeline for providing better treatment facilities to the farmers in the livestock sector. He said that previously central sector scheme Krishi Kalyan Abhiyan under RGM was implemented in two districts and now the Central government has approved to implement the scheme in 18 districts of state with a funding of Rs 12 crore.

It was also informed in the meeting that subsidized Health cover is being provided to sheep and goat population of the division. About 71.41 Lac dewormings, 42.68 Lac dippings and 41.36 Lac vaccinations and 8.04 Lac treatments were administered to sheep and goats, the meeting was told.

The meeting was told that mass de-worming and health cover was provided to sheep and goat population in 100 clusters under National Livestock Mission.

Director Fisheries informed the meeting that Jammu division contributes about 35% of the total fish production of the state and about 7000 fishermen have been registered with the department and are dependent on the fisheries related activities.

He said the department has produced about 40 lakhs of high yield varieties of fish seed and distributed the same to the private fish farmers besides stocking in the Ranjit Sagar reservoir in Kathua to increase the fish production in the state.

He also said that the department has generated over Rs 3 Crore of revenue in Jammu division which includes sale of fish, compensation, from aquarium, etc.

It was further informed that as part of welfare measures   about 1200 low cost houses were constructed for the fishermen and during the last financial year.

Principal Secretary also released a book published by the Animal Husbandry Department namely ‘Dudharu Pashuon Ke Liye Labhkari Jankari’ a guide for dairy farmers.

Later, Dr. Samoon laid foundation stone of Stock Assistant Training Institute here at Balol, Bari Brahmana and Poultry Breeding Farm and Hatchery at Nagrota.
