Dept of Urdu KU organises “Shaam e ghazal”

Srinagar, 20 June: Department of Urdu, University of Kashmir (KU) organised Shaam e ghazal at Ibn e Khaldoon auditorium, KU on Thursday. The event was organised in the backdrop of  week-long book fair which is  being organised by NCPUL(National Council  for Promotion  of Urdu Language) in collaboration with KU in the lawns of Allama Iqbal Library, KU.

The renowned Kashmiri contemporary classical singer Kifayat Fahim who is the alumni of the Urdu Dept KU and a trained musician enthralled audience with his melodious voice. His performance included ghazals from Mirza Ghalib and Mir. Fahim also performed the ghazals of legends including Jagjit Singh and Mehdi Hassan.

The event started with Ghalib’s ghazal “bohat nikley merey armaan lekin phir bhi kam nikley” followed by Jagjit’s ” aapko dekh kar dekhta rehgaya” and “kabhi khamosh baitho ge” evoking a huge appreciation from the audience mostly consisting of students.

It is worth mentioning that Kifayat has performed in live concerts in various parts of the globe.

Meanwhile a one-day seminar on “The future of Urdu journalism in Jammu and Kashmir” was organised at Ibn e Khaldoon auditorium KU by NCPUL on Thursday where the role of Urdu journalism in Kashmir in the past was emphasized.

Eminent poets, journalists and broadcasters including BBC correspondent Riyaz Masroor and former Director Radio Kashmir, Srinagar Syed Humayun Qaisar participated in the seminar.

The seminar culminated with Mehfil e afsana in which eminent Urdu writers read their short stories.
