Chemist shot dead in Baramulla

Baramulla, Mar 30: Unknown gunmen on Saturday shot dead a man in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district. Arjumand Majid Bhat (35) alias Raju Mistry, S/O Abdul Majeed Bhat of Jetti Kowajbah Baramulla, was shot at his shop at around 4.50 pm, resulting in his on-spot death.

Bhat, a chemist and an anti-drug addiction activist was shot inside his shop when unidentified gunman barged in his Medical shop ‘Hadif Medicate’ and fired bullets from point blank killing him on the spot.

“We rushed towards the shop and Arjumand was lying on floor in the pool of blood. He died on spot,” said a nearby shopkeeper. Eye witness further said that the gunmen fired five shots in his neck and head.

Soon after the incident, panic gripped the area and shops were quickly closed as the entire town wore deserted look.

Later, a joint team of the police, Army and SOG reached the spot and body of the slain was taken to the hospital for postmortem. Alert was sounded in the town as forces launched a cordon-and-search operation in the area to nab the assailants besides checking on exits and entry points of the town was intensified.

The slain is survived by two kids and wife besides an aged mother. He was coordinator of drug de-addiction center run in Baramulla and used to carry out awareness programs on drug addiction menace, locals said.

As the body reached home, pall of gloom descended on the entire area and large number of people participated in his funeral prayers.
