Srinagar, Jan 14: Shutdown was observed in Nagbal, Soura and the adjoining areas Monday as a youth from Ganderbal district injured in government forces’ action in Shopian district on Sunday battles for life at Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS), Soura.

Reports said all the shops and business establishments remained closed in Nagbal and Soura while very thin movement of transport was witnessed on the roads.

Earlier in the day, scores of youth staged a protest at Nagbal chowk and blocked the road. However, the road was soon cleared for traffic by the police.

Locals said that Mohammed Rafiq Parray (30), a resident of Rangil area of Nagbal in Ganderbal district, was critically injured after forces opened fire on the mourners during the funeral of Al Badr commander Zeenat-ul-Islam yesterday.

The youth is admitted at SKIMS and has been put on the ventilator, they said even as there was no official confirmation or otherwise to it.

A shutdown was also observed in Shopian district of south Kashmir on Monday to protest against the killing of Al Badr commander Zeenat-ul-Islam and his aide in a gunfight with the government forces.

All shops and other commercial establishments remained closed in the district while transport remained off the roads.

Islam and his aide Shakeel Ahmad were shot dead by the forces in a brief shootout in Yaripora area of the neighbouring Kulgam district on Saturday evening.

Internet also remained suspended in Shopian district on third straight day. The service was suspended soon after the news of Islam’s killing started doing the rounds on Saturday evening.
