Uri, Dec 18: The University of Kashmir deserves all the criticism and choicest invectives students hurl at it for the fair reason that its ill-conceived and faulty decisions are a big cause of irritation and heart-ache for the latter.

Here is a case to prove the point.

The students of 5th and 6th semester (Batch 2016 – Regular) at Government Degree College (GDC) Uri on Tuesday said that they are unable to submit their admission forms on the Kashmir University website even as the last date for the said process has already ended, and the same has been extended to December 21 over some issues being faced by the students.

Interestingly, the position of Principal at the college is lying vacant since May this year. Though HOD Physics, Riyaz Ahmad, is acting as incharge principal, but he, according to the students, rarely visits the institute.

According to the students, University of Kashmir issued the admission notification {no. FBG5th-6thSemAdm/Reg/KU/18s, on 20-11-2018}  for Under-Graduate 5th and 6th semester of Batch 2016 (Regular) and the admission forms, according to the said notification, were available on the varsity website from 28 November to 13 December 2018.

“On November 28, when Kashmir University activated the admission link for 5th and 6th semester students on its official website, we were unable to complete our admission formalities as the required fields for the same were missing on the prescribed link,” said Zeeshan Budoo, a student at GDC Uri.

He said the students have visited the IT Section of the college several times but it couldn’t help.

“The in-charge at the IT section has been telling us to register a case against the Kashmir University for failing to resolve our issue and this doesn’t seem to be a valid answer to our legitimate query,” he added.

That the genuine issues of students were not given a fair hearing at the GDC Uri clearly reveals that no accountability is being exercised at Kashmir University affiliated colleges.

Another student told ‘Kashmir Images’ that nearly 200 students including those from Science and Arts streams are facing same issue and it is ironic that authorities at university are oblivious to it.

“The concerned department at KU should have of its own taken up the matter with the college authorities at GDC Uri –asked them why the admission formalities of its 5th and 6th semester students had not been completed as the first deadline for the same has already expired,” said Bilal Magral, a student at GDC Uri.

The students said that when they contacted the Registration Section of Kashmir University, the officials told them to contact the Examination section and it has been a week now but nobody picks up the phone at the Examination section extension.

“We are already facing huge pressure as the university has decided to conduct combined examination of 5th and 6th semester in August 2019 and the winter vacations are nearing which means the class-work will remain suspended for almost three months,” they added.

When contacted, Kashmir University’s Deputy Controller Examination, Majid Zamaan Baba, expressed shock over the issue and said “give me some time, I will get back to you.”
