LoC hots up: Soldier killed in Kupwara

Baramulla/Srinagar, Dec 6: An army soldier was killed on Thursday as the armies of India and Pakistan exchanged heavy fire along the Line of Control (LoC) in Machhil sector of Kupwara district in north Kashmir. A BSF man was killed and another wounded in similar circumstances in Rajouri district of Jammu region.

“There was unprovoked ceasefire violation by Pakistani troops in Macchil sector in Kupwara district in Jammu and Kashmir today (Thursday) at 10.45 am,” an Army official said.

He said one soldier was killed in the Pakistani firing.

“Our troops retaliated in adequate measure to the Pakistani aggression,” he added.

This was the second “ceasefire violation” along the LoC in Kashmir Valley within 24 hours.

Two soldiers were injured in a “ceasefire violation” by Pakistani troops in Uri sector on Wednesday.

The armies of the two countries exchanged gunfire along Line of control in Ringpayeen, Tantray and Khan Basti areas of Machhil, he said.

Meanwhile, a Border Security Force (BSF) man was killed while another suffered serious injuries in cross-LoC firing in Rajouri district of Jammu region today.

A BSF spokesperson said today at 3:50 pm Pakistan violated ceasefire in Sundarbani area of the district.

“During effective retaliation at 4:30 pm two personnel of 126 Bn BSF got injured and were evacuated for treatment. Constable Paranjit Biswas succumbed to injuries,” he said.
