2 shelter homes for children to come up at Jammu

JAMMU, DECEMBER 06: Two shelter homes under Juvenile Justice System are coming up at Jammu, one for boys and the other for Girls at Christian colony and Shaheedi Chowk here.

The proposed shelter homes will be built on six Kanals of land owned by the Social Welfare Department.

The decision was taken in a meeting chaired by Secretary Social Welfare Department Dr. Farooq Lone today. The meeting was held in consequence to the earlier budget meeting in which the Principal Secretary Finance Department agreed to provide funds for the construction of four shelter homes, two each for Boys and Girls in Jammu and Srinagar.

Mission Director, ICDS and ICPS, Director Social Welfare Jammu, District Social Welfare Officer, Jammu and other concerned attended the today’s meeting.

During the meeting Mission Director ICPS was directed to get the DPRs prepared for construction of the Homes in Jammu. The land for establishing shelter home for boys and girls at Srinagar is being finalized.

The shelter homes are being built for the temporary reception of the Children in need-of-care and protection including street children, absconding children, abandoned children, missing children, destitute, victims of child labour and child abuse.

The stay of Children in such Homes shall be up to a period of one year, where facilities of boarding and lodging besides providing of basic needs in terms of clothing, safe drinking water, education and also vocational training and recreational facilities shall be provided.

The State Government has already established Child Welfare Committees (CWCs) in all the 22 districts of the State including District Jammu. The establishment of the Homes shall enable the Child Welfare Committee, Jammu to rehabilitate in need-of-care and protection.
