40.86% voting in Surasyar block of Budgam, no voting witnessed for majority of seats

Budgam, Nov 24: With the majority of seats witnessing no polling in the third phase of Panchayat election in Surasyar block here, the turnout for few seats which went for polls on Saturday, was recorded 40.86 percent.

Out of 3898 votes, 1592 were polled in the six-hour long polling which began at 8 am and ended at 2 pm, sources said.

Among 16 Sarpanch Halqas and 120 Panch constituencies, only four Sarpanch and one Panch seats went for polls. Voting took place in Branwar, Jabbad, Negoo and Surasyar-A.

Earlier, seven Sarpanchs and 56 Panchs were elected unopposed while five Sarpanch constituencies and 63 Panch wards remained vacant.

A total of 19 nominations were filed for Sarpanch seats and 65 for Panch seats. Among these, the papers of one Sarpanch candidate and three Panch contestants were rejected.

While three Sarpanch and four Panch nominees withdrew their candidature.

Meanwhile, Soibugh block did not see any polling which was scheduled today as majority of seats were vacant or contestants won unopposed.
