Budgam, Nov 23: After Budgam and Rathsun blocks of the district witnessed no polling in the second phase of Panchayat elections, the same would repeat in Soibugh block in the third phase today as maximum seats are lying vacant or candidates are contesting unopposed here.

Due to lack of contestants, eight Sarpanch Halqas among 16 and 126 Panch wards among 152 would remain vacant in Soibugh.

Officials told Kashmir Images that eight Sarpanchs and 26 Panchs were declared winner unopposed.

Earlier, ten candidates turned up to file nominations for Sarpanch seats, among these, papers of one candidate were rejected, while one withdrew his candidature.

For Panch seats, only 35 nominations were submitted. Later, the papers of three candidates were rejected, while six withdrew nominations.

Notably, Soibugh is home to chief of Hizbul Mujahideen, Syed Salahuddin, who is currently in Pakistan.

It is pertinent to mention that the recent municipal elections in Budgam district were also held only in one ward among 72 as other wards either did not find candidates or nominees won unopposed.

Whereas, 30.14 percent of polling was recorded in Khansahib in the first phase of Panchayat elections held last week.

Meanwhile, the voting in Sursyar block here would be held today only in few constituencies as most of the candidates are contesting unopposed or seats are vacant.
