Police orders withdrawal of SPOs from PSO duties

Srinagar: Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Law and Order, Munir Ahmad Khan has issued a formal order saying that any Special Police Officer (SPO) deployed as PSO(personal security officer) to any VIP should be withdrawn forthwith.

The order issued on October 01 reads, “It has been observed that some SPOs are performing PSO duties with the protected persons which is not in accordance with the security norms as SPOs are not trained to perform PSO duties.”

The order asks all concerned officers not to deploy any SPO on PSO duty (except SPO drivers), and withdraw all such SPOs who have been deployed.

In the meantime, a day before the constitution of a special investigation team, police questioned for three days PDP MLA from whose house at Jawaharnagar Srinagar a special police officer decamped with seven AK-47 rifles and licensed pistol of the legislators last week

Official sources said that the police recorded MLA Aijaz Mir’s statement in connection with the incident which occurred on Friday.

They said that the MLA who represents Wachi constituency of Shopian in state assembly was questioned on a wide range of issues as to how long he knows the SPO, Adil Bashir.

Some sources said that the said SPO was appointed on the recommendation of the same MLA and then posted at his official residences as he (the MLA) asked for it.

Meanwhile, the state police on Wednesday said that the investigation in the weapon loot case from official residence of a PDP MLA at Jawahar Nagar area was going on.

Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Law and Order, Munir Ahmad Khan informed Kashmir News Service (KNS) that the Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been constituted to investigate the weapon loot case.

Earlier, a Special Police Officer (SPO) identified as Adil Bashir decamped with seven AK-47 rifles and a licensed pistol of People’s Democratic Party legislator, Aijaz Mir from MLA’s official residence in Srinagar’s Jawahar Nagar on last Friday.

The security was put on high alert after the SPO decamped with the weapons.

ADGP said that the SIT constituted was investigating the case.
