Bandipora, Sep 21: With three more militants killed today in a gunfight raging in north Kashmir’s Bandipora district since yesterday afternoon, police on Friday said five militants were killed in the encounter.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Bandipora, Zulfikar Azad said that the gunfight raging in Sumlar forests since yesterday afternoon has ended with the killings of five militants.

“The bodies of all five militants killed in the gunfight along with the arms and ammunition have been retrieved,” he said, adding that a search operation is still on at the site of the gunfight.

The identity of the slain militants, believed to be foreigners, is yet to be established, he said.

Police sources told ‘Kashmir Images’ that the feet and legs of militants bore injury marks similar to frostbite, which suggest that they might have infiltrated recently through Gurez, and managed to reach in Sumlar forest area.

Army, Special Operations Group of police and the paramilitary CRPF had launched a cordon and search operation in the Shokbaba in Sumlar forest area to nab the militants, following which a gunfight broke out yesterday.

Two militants were killed yesterday even as gunfight continued through night to end today with the killing of three more militants, officials said.

Meanwhile, fearing protests, authorities suspended internet services in Bandipora town on Friday morning.
