An official said closure of the canal, a main source of water for Rangil and Alesteng water supply schemes, will affect parts of Srinagar, Budgam and Ganderbal districts.

“I am personally monitoring the rescue efforts. The water supply will be restored in a short while to avoid any shortage of drinking water to the areas fed by this canal,” said sub-district magistrate Kangan.

The district administration Ganderbal has appealed to the general public to use the water judiciously and cooperate with the district administration.

The PHE department has also issued helpline numbers for water tanker services: 9596318415/9419045371, 01942452047, 2477207.

Meanwhile, efforts were on to locate the body of the teen, identified as Nadeem Bashir (14), who had drowned while taking a bath in the power canal.
