Two CRPF men killed in militant attack in Achabal

Srinagar, Jul 13: Two paramilitary CRPF personnel were killed and one injured in a militant attack in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district Friday.

A civilian was also injured when militants opened fire on a CRPF team deployed at Achabal Chowk in Anantnag and escaped, the sources said.

A police spokesman said that vehicle-borne militants fired upon a CRPF party at Achabal. In the attack, three paramilitary troopers and a shopkeeper sustained bullet wounds and were taken to nearby Achabal hospital for treatment where two of them succumbed.

The two CRPF personnel killed were identified as Assistant Sub-Inspector ML Meena and Constable Sandeep, he said, while the injured civilian has been identified as Ghulam Rasool.

Immediately after the attack, the area was cordoned off and a hunt launched to track down the assailants, the sources added.

Militant outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) claimed responsibility for the attack.

“Lashkar-e-Toiba attacks convoy of CRPF at Achabal Chowk. Claims two killed including an officer and several injured (sic),” LeT spokesman Abdullah Ghaznavi said in an email.

Later in a second email to media organizations here, the spokesman while complimenting its cadres who carried out the attack, said the death toll of the CRPF  men could mount and many others were injured in the attack.
