Army commando killed in ongoing gunfight in Kupwara

Baramulla, Jul 11: In an ongoing gunfight in Kandi forests of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district, an army commando was killed and another injured on Wednesday.

A senior Army official said  that an army soldier of 4 PARA identified as Sepoy Mukul Meena was critically injured in the gunfight at Sadu Ganga forest area of Kandi. The injured soldier was evacuated to military hospital Drugmulla where doctors declared him brought dead.

He said that another army man also sustained critical injuries, and he is being treated in the Army hospital.

The cordon and search operation in the area was launched yesterday late afternoon when troops of Army’s 47 RR encountered a group of militants, the officer said.

He said that the militant group later managed to flee from the area, however, today in the afternoon it was again intercepted with the help of additional reinforcements of Army’s 4 PARA commandos.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kupwara, Ambarkar Shriram Dinkar confirmed the death of the army soldier.

The officer said that the operation in the area is going on.
