Srinagar: Authorities on Saturday declared floods in Srinagar and other districts of central Kashmir as Jhelum crossed the danger mark of 19-ft. The students of Kashmir University who are appearing in examinations today reiterated appeal to the varsity to postpone the paper as has been done by the Directorate of School Education.

The authorities have already closed all the schools across Kashmir Valley in wake of the obtaining situation on the weather front.

Flood was already declared in south Kashmir after the Jhelum rose above 21 feet near Sangam in Anantnag district of south Kashmir.

An official of Irrigation and Flood Control Kashmir told GNS that the river Jhelum crossed 19-ft mark near Rammunshi bagh at 12 a.m.

“The habitation residing along the embankments of River Jhelum / Nallahs and in low lying areas of central Kashmir are advised to remain vigilant,” Chief Engineer Irrigation and Flood Control said. Besides the staff deputed on flood duty in Central Kashmir is directed to report to their respective sectors/beats, he added.

The river Jhelum was flowing at 20.64-ft at Ram Munshibagh at 7 a.m, the official said. The flood ‘is sounded in Central Kashmir when level crosses 16 ft and ‘flood’ is declared when it surges over 19 feet, the officials said.

The river Jhelum was flowing at 23.41-ft, more than two degrees above the danger mark of 21-ft at Sangam when the flood is declared in south Kashmir.

At Asham in Bandipora district, the official said, the water level of Jhelum was 10.41-ft against 13-ft mark when flood alarm is sounded in north Kashmir. The flood is declared when the level at Asham crosses 14-ft mark.

Meanwhile a number of students called GNS, stating that it was difficult for them to appear in the examinations today and urged university authorities to postpone the examination. (GNS)
