Kolkata, Jun 13:  Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) today launched its FTTH (fiber-to-the-home) broadband scheme, in an attempt to take on the “latest telecom player’s” proposed foray into fibre connected broadband service, a senior company official said today.

Calcutta Telephones, the Kolkata circle of BSNL unveiled two combo plans of Rs 777 and Rs 1,277 per month, offering 500 GB and 750 GB monthly data at up to 50 Mbps speeds, besides unlimited voice calls to any network.

“These combo ULD 777 and ULD 1,277 are aggressive plans from BSNL to counter the latest telecom player’s proposed fibre based broadband service in the near future,” Calcutta Telephones CGM, S K Tripathi, said here today.

He, however, did not rule out a sharp drop in revenue from the broadband segment following the scheme’s launch, but said it was necessary to protect price-conscious consumers, and have the first-mover advantage with lucrative plans, rather following the incumbent.

Housing complexes will get 5GB/day data and unlimited voice calls at Rs 199. For the rest, the tariff will be Rs 299 per month, offering 300 GB of data, and 600 GB from Rs 491 per month. All the plans are at 20 Mbps speeds.

The schemes are for a promotional period of 90 days for new customers.

The “latest telecom player” is an apparent reference to Reliance Jio, which has recently announced its foray into FTTH broadband technology.

According to information available on its website, the JioFiber preview offer will provide Internet at up to 100 Mbps speeds for 90 days, along with a monthly data quota of 100 GB.

Meanwhile, Tripathi said the tie-up with Patanjali Ayurved Ltd for co-branded sim cards will generate more mobile connections.
