Clashes mark ‘Youm-e- Quds’ in Nowhatta, adjoining areas

Srinagar, Jun 08: As expected, clashes erupted between government forces and youth after Friday prayers concluded at Jamia Majid at Nowhatta area of Srinagar.

After the culmination of congregational Friday prayers at Jamia Masjid in Nowhatta, young boys took to the streets to hold a rally in solidarity with Palestinians.

Muslims across world observe last Friday of Ramazan as Youm-ul-Quds or Al Quds Day in solidarity with Palestinians.

They were chanting anti-India and pro-freedom slogans.

However, a heavy contingent of police and paramilitary forces deployed there intercepted the youth, triggering clashes, which continued in Nowhatta and adjoining areas for quite some time.

Police and paramilitary forces fired several rounds of tear-gas canisters to disperse the protesting youth.

There were massive clashes between youth and government forces in south Kashmir’s Anantnag town also after the Friday prayers.

Reports said soon after culmination of Friday prayers a large number of youth took to streets to protest against the Israeli occupation of Jerusalem and Palestine.

Forces deployed in Reshi Bazaar area of the main town fired several tear-gas canisters to disperse the protesting youth triggering clashes in the area which continued for quite some time.
