“Later family members and relatives protested and demanded investigation as they said it was a cold-blooded murder,” police said.

They said a special team was established by the SSP Ganderbal Fayaz Ahmad Lone and during investigation, one suspect identified as Mohammad Shafi Magray , a resident of Chunduna was arrested.

“The suspect confessed hand in brutal murder. initial investigation revealed that the prime motive behind murder was the money he was borrowed for the victim,” SSP Ganderbal Fayaz Ahmad Lone said.

“The  accused person had borrowed Rs 80,000 from the  deceased person with a promise of paying him back within few months, but had failed to pay him back, ” SSP said.

“The accused person (Magray) asked  the deceased (Khanday) telephonically to meet him at a specific location at Chunduna in order to get his money  back. When the duo  met at the predefined location, the Magray handed over his cheque-book to the deceased and asked him to write a cheque on his behalf. The moment Khanday bowed down to write the cheque, Magray hit him in the head with a  stone repeatedly and made unsure he was dead. He then  took away Khanday’s Rs 13,500 and mobile phone and  flew from the crime scene,” the police officer said.

“Magray then  boarded a vehicle in Tawheed chowk Ganderbal to Lal Chowk Srinagar. After reaching Lal Chowk, Magray boarded another vehicle to Pulwama, where he abandoned the mobile phone of the deceased in order to mislead the investigation agencies,” SSP said.
