Kupwara, May 19: Army on Saturday claimed to have killed four unidentified militants in an ongoing  gunfight which broke out on Friday late afternoon at Brinjal forests area of Vilgam Handwara near the Line of Control (LoC) in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district.

A top Army official said that the army and police had launched a joint operation in the forests at Brinjal, adjacent to Shahnagar Jat Gali, around 7 kilometres away from Tehsil headquarter near LoC Friday after they received information about the presence of militants there.

During searches, militants opened fire on the forces, triggering encounter in which three militants were killed on Friday, while another militant was killed on Saturday morning.

“ So far four militants have been killed and the operation is still underway; possibility of more militants hiding in the forests could not be ruled out,” the Army official said.

Meanwhile, an Army spokesman said the identity of the slain militants is being ascertained.

Officials said that the slain militants could be foreigners who had infiltrated recently through the LoC from Kupwara.
