Colombo, May 14 :  Army Chief General Bipin Rawat today paid tribute to Indian Peace Keeping Force personnel who died during the Sri Lankan civil war.

Gen Rawat placed a floral wreath at the IPKF monument here and saluted the Indian soldiers who laid down their lives in Sri Lanka’s fight against terrorism, the military said.

The Indian Peace Keeping Force (IPKF) was stationed in Sri Lanka’s war-torn north and east between 1987 and 1990.

The army chief arrived here yesterday on a week-long official visit at the invitation of his Sri Lankan counterpart Lieutenant General Mahesh Senanayake.

During his stay in Sri Lanka, Gen Rawat is scheduled to call on President Maithripala Sirisena, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, the state minister of defence, and Sri Lankan mnilitary commanders.

He will also visit the Sri Lanka Military Academy at Diyatalawa, the eastern port district of Trincomalee and the southern port district of Galle, the military said.
