Star India buys Indian cricket rights for USD 944 million

Mumbai: Star Sports India won the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) media rights for Rs 6138.1 crore for a five-year period from 2018 to 2023 on Thursday. The cost per game comes to Rs 60.1 crore and it includes broadcasting all international matched in India on television as well as on the digital platform from April 15, 2018 until March 31, 2023.

The winner was announced by BCCI treasurer Anirudh Chaudhry on Twitter.

The bid is an increase of 59% from the last one. Star Sports India held the last media rights too from 2012 to 2018 for Rs 3,851 crore. Star Sports India already has the rights for the Indian Premier League (IPL) T20 tournament for a four-year period from 2018 to 2022 for Rs 16,347.5 crore.

Apart from Star Sports India, the other bidders for the Global Consolidated Rights (which includes broadcast as well as digital rights for India and Rest of the World) were Sony Reliance Jio.

The rights include:1) Global Television Rights plus Rest of the World Digital Rights Package 2) Indian Subcontinent Digital Rights Package 3) Global Consolidated Rights Package

Star India Private Ltd, Reliance Industries Limited and Sony Pictures Networks India Private Limited were found eligible to submit online financial bids. BCCI was assisted by MJunction Services Limited, Deloitte Haskins & Sells LLP and Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas during the bidding process. The process started on April 3, 2018 at the BCCI headquarters, Cricket Centre in Mumbai.
