Separatists call for shutdown on Maqbool Butt, Afzal Guru anniversaries

Srinagar, Feb 06: The separatist leadership has called for complete shutdown on February 09 and February 11, against the hanging of Muhammad Afzal Guru and Muhammad Maqbool Butt.

nt issued here, separatist trio of Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Mohammad Yasin Malik said massive protests should be staged across Kashmir while as on February 11, a joint memorandum will be submitted to UN Military Observers Office at Sonawar asking it to urge India to return the mortal remains of Guru and Bhat.

“The struggle and sacrifices rendered by Muhammad Maqbool Bhtt and Muhammad Afzal Guru is a glorious chapter of our resistance history. India not only hanged these Kashmiris but also has kept their mortal remains under its custody till now. The struggle, passion for freedom and sacrifices of these great Kashmiris will always remain a beacon light for Kashmiri nation,” the joint statement said.

Giving details about the protest programme, it said “on 9th February, besides complete shutdown, protests will be held at various places demanding the mortal remains of the leaders.

“On 11th also, besides a complete and comprehensive strike, people of Kashmir will march to UN office at Sonawar and present a memorandum to UN Secretary General and demand the return of mortal remains of Muhammad Maqbool Butt and Muhammad Afzal Guru.”

They appealed the people of the state to make the protest program successful.
