8 drug peddlers arrested: Police

Srinagar: Police on Friday said they have arrested eight drug peddlers, smugglers in Shopian and Baramulla and recovered contraband substances from their possession.    

In Shopian, a police party intercepted two suspicious persons at a checkpoint at Peerpora Keegam, and recovered 184 grams of cannabis-like substance wrapped in corn leaves from their possession. Both persons, identified as Bilal Ahmad Dar, son of Sonaullha Dar, and Akir Ayoub Hakim, son of Mohammad Ayoub, residents of Arihal Pulwama were arrested.  

At Reban Shopian, police intercepted a vehicle (JK13G-7741) with two persons on board. However, after seeing the police party, both the persons left the vehicle and managed to flee from the spot. During search of the said vehicle, 3.5kgs of poppy straw-like substance was recovered and the vehicle was seized, police said.

In Baramulla, a police party during routine patrolling at Juhama Baramulla arrested a wanted drug smuggler identified as Shabir Ahmad Lone, son of Abdul Rehman Lone of Nadihal Baramulla. During his search, 72 grams of cannabis-like substance was recovered from his possession.

At Khanpora Baramulla, police arrested two wanted drug smugglers identified as Shahid Ahmad Marazi, son of Ghulam Qadir, resident of Kanlibagh Baramulla, and Adil Ahmad Gogri, son of Bashir Ahmad, resident of Khanpora Baramulla. During the search, 12 grams of brown sugar-like substance was recovered from their possession.

At Janbazpora, police arrested three wanted drug smugglers — Atiqullah Lone, son of Mohammad Akbar Lone of Tujjar Sharief Sopore; Ghulam Mohiuddin Dar, son of Abdul Ahad Dar, resident of Ladoora Rafiabad Sopore, and Gulzar Ahmad Ganie, son of Habibullah Ganie of Chijhama Rafiabad Sopore. During the search, 101 grams of brown sugar-like substance was recovered from their possession.

 All the accused persons have been arrested and shifted to respective police stations where they remain in custody while cases under relevant sections of law have been registered and further investigations initiated, police said.
