8 drug-peddlers arrested

Srinagar: Police have arrested eight drug-peddlers in Ganderbal, Sopore and Budgam and recovered psychotropic substances from their possession.

In Ganderbal, a vehicle (JK01V-7981) was intercepted at Waskoora, and a huge consignment of psychotropic substances including 140 codeine phosphate bottles kept hidden under the window cardboards of the said vehicle were recovered and seized, police spokesman informed. He said while the vehicle was seized, the person driving it — Ajaz Ahmad Malik, son of Manzoor Ahmad Malik, resident of Waskoora – was arrested.

In Sopore, six persons travelling in a car (DL3CAB-3898) were arrested at Ningli Bala Nambal after 888 capsules of SpasmoProxyvon were recovered from the vehicle. The arrested persons were identified as Muhammad Ibrahim Sofi, son of Muhammad Sultan, and Zubair Ahmad Bhat, son of Abdul Rashid Bhat, both residents of Aalibagh Hygam; Tanveer Ahmad Sumji alias Pintoo, son of Farooq Ahmad Sumji of Sher Colony Sopore; Imran Manzoor Guroo, son of Manzoor Ahmad Guroo of Khushal Colony Sopore; Arshad Rashid Wani, son of Abdul Rashid Wani of Izzat Shah Colony Sopore; and Shabir Ahmad Bhat, son of Ali Mohammad Bhat of Amargarh Sopore. The vehicle was also seized.

In Budgam, at a checkpoint established at Harran, police intercepted a vehicle (DL10CT-4968) driven by one Nisar Ahmad Sheikh, son of Ghulam Nabi Sheikh of Sector D Hamdaniya Colony Bemina. During the search, 330 strips of Tapentadol (3300 tablets) and 25 strips of Spasmo-Proxyvon (200 capsules) were recovered from the said vehicle, following which the driver was arrested.

Police said preliminary investigations have revealed that the arrested person is a chronic drug-peddler and that he was selling the illegal drugs among the youth of district Budgam. Various FIRs have already been registered against him in different police stations in Srinagar district.

Cases under relevant sections of law have been registered in respective police stations and further investigations have been initiated, police said.
