‘Truck carrying huge quantity of illicit timber seized in Sheeri’

Baramulla: Continuing with its drive to curb the unabated timber smuggling in different parts of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, a special team of forest department and police on Sunday seized huge logs of illicit timber being smuggled from Boniyr Uri forests in a truck at Sheeri in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district.

Forest Conservator North Kashmir Irfan Rasool said that a truck bearing registration number JK02BH 2215 loaded with huge logs of illegal timber was seized near the Petrol pump Sheeri and its driver was arrested by a special team of forest officials.

“Acting on specific inputs at control Room Baramulla a checkpoint ‘ nakka’ was laid at Sheeri near the petrol pump by the forest officials team. A truck bearing registration number JK02BH 2215 carrying huge logs of green gold smuggled from Boniyar forests was intercepted,” he informed.

He further said that the team led by Range Officer Baramulla Rameez Ahmad during checking of the vehicle found fresh deodar logs of about 40 cft laden in the truck.

“The driver was arrested and the vehicle was seized along with the timber,” he said.

During the preliminary investigation it was revealed that the stumps were identified in forest compartment number 27 of Nowshera Boniyar, the officials said.

The officials said that cases have been registered in police station Sheeri and further investigation is going on in this regard. Meanwhile, people from a cross-section of society have hailed the efforts of the forest department for curbing the unabated forest loot.
