Four injured in grenade attack at HSHS, Srinagar

Srinagar: Police claimed to have arrested a ‘notorious stone pelter’ for throwing a grenade in the busy Hari Singh High Street area of uptown Srinagar today that injuring four persons including a cop and two women.

Hours after the attack, the Inspector General of Police, Vijay Kumar took to social networking site Twitter disclosing that the ‘grenade thrower’ has been arrested.

Kashmir Zone Police tweeted: “#Chronic stone pelter Aijaz Wani S/O Fayaz Wani R/O Fatehkadal, #Srinagar lobbed grenade on civilians in which a few civilians got injured, #arrested. #Investigation is going on: IGP Kashmir”

Earlier, the police tweeted, “Srinagar Police arrested grenade thrower who was involved in today’s #terror incident at Hari Singh High Street #Srinagar in which a few civilians and one police personnel got injured. #Investigation is going on: IGP Kashmir”

Official sources said that militants lobbed the grenade towards a team of security personnel at crowded Hari Singh High Street at around 3.25 PM. The grenade exploded by the roadside.

Four persons were injured in the blast. They have been identified as police inspector Tanveer Hussain who is posted with ACB, Mohammad Shafi, his wife Tanveera and another woman Asmat, said the sources.

The injured were rushed to a hospital where their condition was stated to be stable, they said.

Meanwhile, a police spokesman in a statement said: “At about 1525hrs, unknown terrorists hurled a grenade upon a police vehicle near Hari Singh High Street, Srinagar. In this terror incidentfew civilians sustained minor splinter injuries. It also caused minor damage to the police vehicle. All the injured were immediately shifted to nearby hospital, where from they have been discharged after required treatment.”

It is pertinent to mention here that security has been beefed up in the city and elsewhere in the valley to ensure smooth Republic Day celebrations.
