HM virtually launches DGGI in J&K
“District is an important unit of good governance”
New Delhi: The Union Minister for Home and Cooperation, Amit Shah today said that a district is an important unit if good governance is to be taken to the grassroots level.
While virtually launching the District Good Governance Index (DGGI) in Jammu Kashmir, Shah said the way Lt. Governor Manoj Sinha is governing Jammu & Kashmir under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, a big change has been seen in the UT, in line with the vision of a New India, a statement issued by Press Information Bureau (PIB) said.
“Today is an important day not only for Jammu &Kashmir but the country as a whole, because the new beginning that Jammu &Kashmir has made will reach every State and this will lead to healthy competition of good governance in every district of the country,” the statement quoted the Home Minister as saying.
As per the statement, the Home Minister said that a district is an important unit if good governance is to be taken to the grassroots level in the true sense and unless there is good governance at the district level, it has no meaning.
He further said that competition between districts through this Good Governance Index will be of great benefit to the general public of Jammu &Kashmir
Jammu &Kashmir District Good Governance Index covers 10 sectors of governance and 58 indices with 116 data items, which include, Agriculture Services, Commerce and Industry, Human Resources, Environment, Justice and Public Safety, Social Welfare and Development.
Meanwhile, a government communiqué issued here confirmed that in the composite ranking of first ever District Good Governance Index (DGGI) released today by Home Minister, Amit Shah here the Jammu district has managed to top the list followed by districts of Doda, Samba, Pulwama and Srinagar in the UT.
Under individual categories Kishtwar has been rated top in Agriculture sector, Jammu in 2 sectors of C&I and Citizen Centric Governance, Pulwama in HRD, Reasi in Public Health, Srinagar in Public Infrastructure, Ramban in Social Welfare, Ganderbal in Financial Inclusion, Doda in Judicial & Public Safety and Shopian in Environment.
In the overall ranking Ganderbal stands at 6th place, Anantnag at 7th then by Baramulla district at 8th place followed by Kathua (9th), and Kupwara at 10th place.
The last 10 district in the index includes Kishtwar ranked 11th followed by districts of Budgam, Udhampur, Reasi, Bandipora, Ramban, Kulgam, Shopian, Poonch and Rajouri being at the bottom of the index in the composite ranking.
