J&K reports 5,720 new Covid cases, 5 more deaths
Authorities impose 64-hour restrictions across Kashmir
Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir on Friday recorded 5,720 fresh coronavirus cases that took the infection tally to 3,84,381, while five more fatalities pushed the death toll to 4,591, officials said.
3830 fresh cases were reported from Kashmir division and 1,890 were from the Jammu division, they said.
Srinagar district recorded the highest number of fresh cases at 1,341, followed by 1,306 in Jammu district.
Out of 384381 positive cases, 34882 are active positive (11602in Jammu division and 23280 in Kashmir division), 344908 have recovered and 4591 have died; 2241 in Jammu division and 2350in Kashmir division, said the officials.
They said that Baramulla reported 688 cases; Budgam 550 cases; Pulwama 170 cases; Kupwara 208 cases; Anantnag 237 cases; Bandipora 241 cases; Ganderbal 246 cases; Kulgam reported 106 cases and; Shopian reported 43 fresh cases.
Reasi reported 71 cases; Udhampur 100 cases; Rajouri 62 cases; Doda 103 cases; Kathua 61 cases; Samba 99 cases; Poonch 48 cases; Kishtwar 18 cases and; Ramban reported 22 fresh cases, said the officials.
They said that 39,460d doses of Covid vaccines have been administered in the last 24 hours bringing the cumulative number of doses administered across J&K to 2,01,21,261.
Meanwhile, authorities on Friday afternoon imposed restrictions on the non-essential movement of people across Kashmir as a 64-hour lockdown began in the union territory in view of an exponential rise in the number of coronavirus cases since the beginning of the new year, officials said.
Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday recorded 5992 fresh cases of coronavirus — the highest single day spike since the pandemic began. There are 31,044 active cases in the UT.
Police vehicles fitted with public address systems announced the restrictions at several places across the valley in the afternoon after the government ordered complete restriction on non-essential movement during from 2 pm on Friday till 6 am on Monday in the entire Jammu and Kashmir, the officials said.
Shops and other business establishments in the city and elsewhere in the valley – which had opened this morning – were shut in view of the restrictions, they said.
The police closed the markets and asked people to return to their homes.
After the movement of people early in the morning, the police erected barricades at several places in the city here and other areas of the valley and the movement of public was restricted, the officials said.
They said only employees and emergency cases were allowed to move and all other non-essential movement was restricted.
The district authorities appealed to the people to cooperate with the administration and curtail their movement in view of the rising cases.
