Srinagar: A brief exchange of firing took place between militants travelling in a vehicle and security forces guarding a check point in Soura area of the city on Tuesday evening, but there were no casualties reported, officials said.
A team of security forces signalled a car to stop at a mobile vehicle check-point (naka) in Soura at around 6.45 pm, the officials said.
“The driver, however, did not stop and the militants in the car opened firing on the party, which was retaliated by the security forces,” one of the officials said.
The officials said no casualties were reported in the incident so far.
Local news agency KNO reported that a team of police led by SP Hazratbal along with CRPF men were checking vehicles at a naka (check-point) when militant fired at them.
“Militants fired at the joint party in which no police or CRPF men were injured. In retaliation, probably one militant received injury but escaped. We are following vehicle borne militants,” the news agency quoted a police official as saying.
Meanwhile, security forces arrested four “terrorist associates linked with proscribed outfit JeM” and recovered incriminating materials including arms and ammunition from their possession, police said on Tuesday.
Acting on specific input, police along with the troops of 50 RR and 110Bn CRPF apprehended four “terrorist associates” of Jaish-e-Mohammad outfit, police said.
He identified the arrested person as Zubair Gul, son of Ghulam Mohammad Ganie; Adil Fayaz Ganie, son of Fayaz Ahmed Ganie; Basit Ali, son of Ali Mohammad Dar, all residents of Samboora, and Shahid Nabi Pandith, son of Ghulam Nabi Pandith, resident of Konibal Pampore.
Incriminating materials, arms and ammunition including a pistol and a hand-grenade were recovered from their possession, police said.
“During the preliminary investigation, it was revealed that the arrested terrorist associates were in touch with JeM commanders & were involved in transportation of arms and ammunition. Besides, they were providing shelter and other logistic support to the active terrorists operating in Samboora and Pampore areas of Awantipora,” a police spokesperson said.
He said a case under relevant sections of law has been registered in Police Station Pampore and further investigation has been taken up.
