Two extortionists arrested in Kulgam, Bandipora: Police

‘Extorted money from common people by threatening’

Srinagar: Police claimed to have arrested 2 extortionists in Kulgam and Bandipora involved in extorting money from gullible people.

According to the police spokesperson, extorted cash and a knife was also recovered from their possession.

“In Kulgam, Police received a written complaint from one Shabir Ahmad Bhat resident of Bachroo stating that a person namely Mohammad Iqbal Bhat resident of Bachroo extorted money from him in the name of Police department. The accused person threatened him that Police will arrest him as he was earlier involved in drug peddling and demanded ₹50,000/- from him to avoid arrest. The complainant paid him ₹20,000/- in advance as he was frightened that he may be arrested by Police for the unknown crime,” the spokesperson said.

“Accordingly, a case vide FIR No. 205/2021 under relevant sections of law was registered in Police Station Kulgam and started investigation into the matter,” he said.

The spokesperson further said: “A special investigating team led by SHO PS Kulgam under the supervision of DySP Hqrs Kulgam Ghulam Muhamad Bhat swung into action and arrested the accused & also recovered the extorted money from his possession. During questioning, the accused confessed about his involvement into the pre-planned crime. Further investigation of the case is in progress.”

“In Bandipora, Police received information that some miscreants impersonating as terrorists were extorting money from people during evening hours in different areas of Bandipora town. Accordingly, a case under relevant sections of law was registered at PS Bandipora and investigation was initiated,” he said.

“During the course of investigation, officers taking assistance of modern techniques and human leads were able to zero in one suspect namely Aejaz Ahmad Sheikh resident of Bandipora. Subsequently, he was arrested and during questioning he confessed his involvement in the commission of crime.  On his disclosure, weapon of offence (knife) used in the commission of crime was also recovered. Further investigation into the matter is in progress,” he added.
