Srinagar: An unidentified militant was killed in an encounter with security forces in Kulgam district of south Kashmir on Sunday, police said.

“Security forces launched a cordon and search operation in Munand area of the south Kashmir district on Sunday morning following inputs about the presence of terrorists there,” a police official said.

“As the forces were conducting searches in the area, the terrorists fired upon them,” he said.

“The forces retaliated, ensuing an encounter in which one terrorist was killed,” the official said.

The operation is on and further details are awaited, he added.

Meanwhile, one of the three militants killed in the gunfight with security forces in Bandipora forests has been identified as a local while the other two are foreigners, officials said on Sunday.

The trio was killed in the encounter in Sumlar-Aragam woods in the north Kashmir district after the militants opened fire on a joint team of Police, Army’s 13RR, 14RR, Marcos, Para Special Force and CRPF in the woods as per police.

Quoting Inspector General of Police Kashmir, Vijay Kumar, news agency GNS reported that “one of the three slain terrorists has been identified as Sariq Altaf, a resident of Bandipora and affiliated with the LeT outfit.”

Sariq, the IGP said, had ex-filtrated via Wagah border in 2018 and had infiltrated recently through Line of Control.

The other two killed in the gunfight at Sumlar-Aragam area are foreigners, the top police officer of Kashmir added.

A police officer said that Sariq’s family was called in yesterday for the last rites adding the trio was buried in Handwara.

He said that a search operation was going on in the woods to rule out presence of any more militants in the area.
