Srinagar: A journalist was allegedly beaten by the Jammu and Kashmir police cops on National highway at Sangam in South Kashmir’s Anantnag district on Saturday evening.

Reports reaching the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) said that Akash Hassan, a freelance journalist, was beaten up by police at Sangam when he was in way to his home

Talking to KNO, Akash Hassan said that he was beaten by a sub-inspector rank officer and his PSO on the National highway at Sangam without any provocation.

He said that he was on way to home from Srinagar to Fatehpur in Anantnag and got stuck in a traffic jam, however, after spending over half-an-hour there, he was simply following the vehicle which was before him.

“Suddenly a sub-inspector rank officer and his PSO started beating me and after I told them that I am a journalist, but they didn’t stop and I got hit on my nose and hand,” he said, adding that he was on way to hospital.

“I was just beaten up by JKP cops at Sangam while I was on way home and they were cleaning traffic. A sub-inspector named Zahid and his one PSO came in front of my car and slapped and beat me up by batons—and the barrage of abuses,” Akash Tweeted along with his photographs in an injured condition.

Meanwhile officials at police post Sangam denied the allegations and said that he was just asked to remain in single lane.

However, police said that they have taken cognizance of the issue and circumstances that led to this were being looked into.

“Cognisance taken. Circumstances that led to this being looked into. During rush evening hours a loaded truck got stuck due to mechanical fault on Sangam bridge leading to heavy traffic jamming. Been working hard to clear it. Request all to cooperate with police & avoid confrontation,” Anantnag police Tweeted—(KNO)
