‘Introduce new varieties on trial-basis under expert supervision’

Srinagar: Advisor to Lieutenant Governor, Baseer Ahmad Khan, today chaired a meeting of Floriculture, Parks and Gardens Department at Civil Secretariat here.

The meeting was attended by Commissioner Secretary Floriculture, Parks and Gardens, Sheikh Fayaz Ahmad, Director Floriculture Kashmir, Director Planning Floriculture and Director Finance Floriculture.

While chairing the meeting, Advisor directed the officers to explore ways and means to improve the beautification of parks and gardens. During the meeting discussions were held regarding plantation drives, cluster plantation, avenue plantation and ornamental plantation to make the gardens and parks more attractive for the tourists.

The Advisor was given a detailed brief by the Commissioner Floriculture about the facilities and improvements being introduced in the department. The Advisor instructed the officers to be proactive and ensure that the beautification of gardens, parks and the facilities being manned by the department is done meticulously by introducing new varieties of ornamental plants and state of the art landscaping.

The introduction of ornamental plants like Sakura at few places especially in the peripheral area of Tulip Garden was discussed. Advisor directed that any new variety to be introduced should be planted under the careful supervision of the experts and after examining its feasibility taking into account the climatic conditions. He said that any new variety to be introduced should be first planted on demonstration basis so as to see its behaviour and proper study of its resistance to the climatic conditions. He also said that consultants need to be employed so that a holistic mechanism is adopted with finer details being taken into account.

He stressed on the need to have proper planning and foolproof mechanism in place to make expenditure of any kind more fruitful and adaptive to the present needs keeping in view the importance of Tourism in Jammu as well as Kashmir.

Commissioner Secretary Floriculture informed the Advisor about the beautification of various parks and gardens and said that efforts are underway to improve the facilities for the visitors.
