Narco-terror module busted; 10 held with heroin worth Rs 45 cr, weapons: Police

Baramulla: The police on Saturday said it has busted a narco-terror module in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district and arrested 10 people with a huge quantity of heroin, worth Rs 45 crore, along with arms and ammunition.

Addressing a press conference in Baramulla district, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Rayees Mohammad Bhat, said 10 Chinese grenades, four Chinese pistols along with as many magazines and 20 rounds were also recovered from their possession.

“A big narco-terror module, which was operating from different places in the union territory as well outside it, was busted by arresting the ten people,” the SSP said.

He said the police recovered 11 packets of heroin, weighing approximately nine kilograms, with a market value of Rs 45 crore.

Among the 10 people, four were arrested from Jammu. Three among the four were from Punjab, he said.

He said Rs 2.5 lakh cash and a cheque of Rs one lakh were also seized from the accused. Bhat said that the police have also seized four vehicles used in the commission of the crime.

The senior police officer said it is a big catch and more arrests are expected.

Sharing details, the SSP said that on specific information, police along with Army’s 3 Rajput and 53Bn CRPF had established a checkpoint at Bandi Uri. A car was signaled to stop, but the person driving the said vehicle tried to flee from the spot.

However, the joint party stopped the vehicle and found three persons travelling in it. They were identified as Sajid Ahmad Shah, son of Mohammad Nazir Shah of Lalpora Lolab, Kupwara; Sharafat Khan, son of Lal Badshah Khan of Keran Kupwara, and Shahid Hussain, son of Wali Mohammad Rather, resident of Khaipora Tangmarg.

“During checking, the joint party recovered some quantity of contraband substance (heroin) and arms/ammunition along with cash from the said vehicle. All the three persons were arrested,” SSP Baramulla said.

Upon their questioning, it was revealed that the said arms/ammunition and heroin “was received from across the LoC to provide aid to the militant outfits”, the SSP said.

He said the arrested persons also disclosed that some deliveries had been taken by some other parties. As per their disclosure, special checkpoints were immediately established, and in subsequent action, three more persons were also arrested.

Those arrested were identified as Reyaz Ahmad Hajam, son of Ali Mohammad Hajam of Yarikah Chadoora, Budgam; Adil Bashir, son of Bashir Ahmad, resident of Nemthal Chadoora Budgam, and Angraz Singh, son of Harjeet Singh, resident of Chadharpur Tehsil-Ajnala, District Amritsar Punjab.

Another car and a scooty, some cash and some heroin besides arms/ammunition were seized fro their possession, the police officer said.

He said a police party from Baramulla headed by Addl. SP Baramulla and assisted by Jammu Police also arrested four more accused persons from Jammu.

They have been identified as Raman, son of Prem, resident of Housing Board Colony Ferozpur Punjab; Rohit, son of Gopal Chand, resident of Bastia border road Ferozpur, Punjab; Krishan, son of Vijay Kumar, resident of Bastia border road Ferozpur Punjab, and Fayaz Ahmad Khan, son of Mohammad Ashraf, resident of Keran Kupwara.

From their possession, Indian currency worth Rs16 lakhs was recovered and a truck was also seized.

The total incriminating materials recovered at the instance of the accused includes 10 Chinese grenades, four Chinese pistols and as many magazines, 20 pistol rounds, Indian Currency Rs 21.5 lakhs, 9 kg heroin (worth ₹45 crores) and two Cheques (amounting Rs 100,000). Besides, three vehicles (Eicher Canter Truck – PB13AR-8956; Hyundai Verna — DL7CM-9873; and Maruti Swift — JK01AP-0040 and a Scooty — JK01AA-1827) were also seized, police said.

In this connection, a case (FIR no. 63/2021) under relevant sections of law stands registered in Police Station Uri and further investigation is going on.
