Cyber Police recovers Rs 6 lakh from online fraudsters
Srinagar: Kashmir’s Cyber Police Station on Wednesday claimed to have recovered Rs 6 lakh from online fraudsters.
A Cyber Police handout said that multiple complaints were received in past one week wherein complainants were duped by fraudsters through ‘Remote Access Mobile Application Scam’.
As per the handout, many complainants were duped of lakhs of rupees on the software platform.
The scamsters impersonated as BSNL/JIO customer care representatives and sent fake messages on the victims’ mobile phones asking them to complete the KYC of their sim cards and giving a warning message that the SIM cards will be deactivated in case they failed to comply with the directions, the Cyber Police said.
It further said the fraudsters asked the victims to complete the KYC verification by downloading some apps like Quick Support, TeamViewer, Any Desk, etc.
The victim by downloading these apps on their cell phones gave complete remote access to the fraudsters, police said.
“Unaware, of this these victims downloaded the apps and allowed the fraudsters to see everything on their phone. The fraudster then guided these victims to log in banking application app and then log out again, which lets the fraudsters to see not only the victims’ User ID but also the Password,” it added.
Police further said that once the login process was complete, these scammers asked the victims to transfer a little amount of Rs 10 to validate whether the KYC process has been completed.
With this scammers see the victims banking MPIN password of their banking application and then proceeded to siphon off thousands and lakhs of rupees within a few minutes in multiple transactions, it said.
However, the Financial team of Cyber Police Kashmir acted swiftly and with strenuous efforts was able to recover Rs 6 lakh of the victims within no time which were transferred to different e-wallets and was successful in saving hard earned money of gullible public, the Cyber Police statement said.
Police said that amid the prevailing COVID-19 pandemic when the public is dependent on cyber platforms, the vulnerability of getting trapped into cyber scams/frauds gets increased.
It asked people to refrain from downloading any remote taking apps like Team viewer quick support, Anydesk App, etc., or dialing fake helpline or customer care numbers found in fake messages.
The Cyber Police also advised people not to share any banking confidential information like OTPs, Card Number, CVV, etc., to anyone over the phone.
